In November 2008 rather than drive home for Thanksgiving, I took a trip out to New Mexico to see the northern part of the “Land of Enchantment.” I’d been to the state before, but only across the south and it had been eight years.

Valle Grande is at the heart of New Mexico’s Valles Caldera, a supervolcano. I drove through the mountains and emerged upon this scene. Spectacular! I continued south to Jemez Springs where I stopped at Jemez State Monument.

Sunset in the Mirror Off Highway 16 near Bernalillo, New Mexico | November 2008
On my way home I stopped on the side of the road to watch the sunset. The photos above and below are from the side of Highway 16 near Bernalillo. It might not the famed California sunset, but it’s definitely a beautiful event.
